Hypoxia
is the most common complication in suctioning
Prevention of Hypoxia:
Hyperoxygenate
prior to suctioning
NEVER suction more
10-15
seconds
Use
sterile
technique when suctioning
DO NOT suction while
inserting
the catheter as it can cause trauma or bleeding. Suction only while
withdrawing
Suction in a
circular
manner by
rotating
catheter. (ensures all surfaces are reached and prevents trauma)
Apply
intermittent
suction on withdrawal of the catheter
Unconscious patient positioning:
Side-lying
facing the nurse
Suctioning - Total time should be maximum of
5 minutes
. Interval -
20 to 30 seconds
