  • Hypoxia is the most common complication in suctioning
  • Prevention of Hypoxia: Hyperoxygenate prior to suctioning
  • NEVER suction more 10-15 seconds
  • Use sterile technique when suctioning
  • DO NOT suction while inserting the catheter as it can cause trauma or bleeding. Suction only while withdrawing
  • Suction in a circular manner by rotating catheter. (ensures all surfaces are reached and prevents trauma)
  • Apply intermittent suction on withdrawal of the catheter
  • Unconscious patient positioning: Side-lying facing the nurse
  • Suctioning - Total time should be maximum of 5 minutes. Interval - 20 to 30 seconds
