Urine

• Random urine sample amount: At least 10 cc
• Normal Urine

  • Color: Straw, Clear, Amber
  • Odor: Aromatic
  • pH: 4.5 - 8
  • Specific Gravity: 1.010 to 1.030
• High urine specific gravity may indicate SIADH
• Low urine specific gravity may indicate Diabetes Insipidus
• UTI prevention

  • Diet: Acid Ash (Cranberry, Prune, Plum)
  • Male wipe: Glans to Shaft
  • Female wipe: Front to back
  • Increase OFI
  • Cotton underwear, NO silk or nylon
  • Shower, NO tub bath
  • Void immediately after coitus
• Confirmatory test for UTI: Urine Culture and Sensitivity
• Clean-catch or midstream urine order: Clean(H2O) > Void > Catch > Void > Clean
• Cathetherize Urine Collection for Culture and Sensitivity

  1. Clamp the tubing below the port for 30 mins to 1 hour
  2. Clean site with alcohol and cotton
  3. Collect urine from the tubing by puncturing
• Timed Collection

  • Duration: 24 hrs
  • 1st void: Discard
  • 2nd to last void: Collect
  • Missed void: Restart the collection
