Sputum

• Oral care can be performed prior to sputum collect with water ONLY
• If with mouth wash, perform oral care after collection
• Teach patient NOT to spit as saliva might contaminate the specimen
• After deep breathing exercises, teach patient to "Hack Up" and "Cough Out'
• AFB (Acid Fast Bacillus) to diagnose Pulmonary TB
• Cytology for bronchogenic carcinoma (Lung cancer)
• Culture and Sensitivity for PTB, Pneumonia
