Making salt

Cards (2)

  • Making salt method;
    1. Firstly, measure 30cm^3 of the acid into a beaker and then add a powdered metal (or oxide, hydroxide, carbonate) in excess (when there is unreacted powder left) to ensure that all acid has reacted.
    2. Secondly, filter the mixture to remove excess metal.
    3. Thirdly, gentely heat the solution in a evaporating basin over a water bath. Stop heating when small crystals start to form around the edge.
    4. Finally, leave the solution over night to form large crystals. If necessary the crystals could be dabbed gently with a paper towel.
  • For this practical the acid and metal/oxide/hydroxide/carbonate that needs to be used will be based on the salt that needs to be made.
