Free will

• Humanists argue that external cause don’t set our behaviours
• Instead we have personal agency, the ability of individuals to shape their own lives through conscious decision making
• Separates out what is the intention of an individual from what has been created by other causes
• Humanists believe we are self- determining and have free will
• This means we aren’t affected by external/ internal factors but we are active agents who determine our own behaviour
• it ignores Science and the general laws that are developed from this
• Free will is the third force in psychology
• Humans are able to make their own decisions and aren’t determined by environmental or biological factors
• Humanists reject the scientific models that try to generalise human behaviour
• Humanist psychologists believe that we as individuals are all unique, therefore the ways of studying should be unique and subjective to personal experience too
