river landforms-deposition

    Cards (3)

    • what is a flood plain?
the wide valley floor on either side of a river
    • how are levees formed?
-during a flood sediment spills over the banks and is transported by the water
-as the water loses energy it deposits heavy material close to the river channel
-over time it leads to a build up in the material forming raised areas of land called levees along the edges of river channels
    • how do estuaries form?
-the water is tidal so the rising tide pushes back against the flowing river water creating an estuary
-as the rivers velocity reduces deposition occurs which causes sediment to build up
