  • Eosinophillic keratitis presents with “Cottage cheese deposits”: white to pale pink elevated spots on the cornea that may coalesce into a raised plaque. This can be either unilateral or bilateral. this is an immune-mediated condition with a possible connection with herpesvirus. diagnosis is made on appearance and cytology which has a mixed cellular infiltrate. treatment is long-terms with topical corticosteroid or cyclosporin. It is possible for treatment to induce reactivation of a herpesvirus infection.
  • what is your top differential?
    eosinophillic keratitis
  • corneal sequestrum is an idiopathic condition with a varied appearance. it varies from amber corneal discolouration to a dark brown plaque. this characteristic clinical appearance (commonly unilateral) is enough for diagnosis and a chronic irritation may predispose a cat to it. treatment is ideally a keratectomy +/- graft placement at referral but sometimes the lesions slough over time.
  • feline diffuse iris melanoma presents unilaterally with Hyperpigmented iris spot(s), usually progressing to diffuse hyperpigmentation of whole iris +/- abnormalities in pupil shape +/- uveitis/glaucoma. this can be suspected from the clinical appearance but histopathology provides a definitive diagnosis. treatment is ideally enucleation (+ histopathology) but the prognosis is guarded due to the high risk of metastasis
  • what is your top differential?
    feline diffuse iris melanoma
  • what is your top differential?
    corneal sequestrum
  • When a cats iris changes colour/becomes pigmented it can be hard to identify if this is neoplastic or not. Signs that may suggest FDIM include…
    • Pigmented spots with a raised surface
    • Pupil abnormalities - anisocoria, dyscoria
    • Progression of hyperpigmentation
    • Secondary uveitis/glaucoma
  • iris melanomas in dogs tend to be discrete benign masses that can be discoric whereas in cats it is more diffuse. In the dog, if they are comfortable you may be able to leave them but in the cat you need to think about removal earlier
