Referendums were unknown in the UK until 1973, when voters is NI were asked wether they wanted to stay in the UK.
National referendum
The first national referendum was held by Labour PM Harold Wilson, over joining the EEC.
2016
The most far reaching and impactful referendum was the vote for Brexit, held by DavidCameron. Ultimately leading to his resignation and introducing May, who later resigned over division over the issue.
