  • Proposing Legislation
    The PM announces a new programme at the start of each parliamentary session in the Queens Speech. E.g, Cameron proposed, the Brexit referendum and legislation to protect against strikes.
  • Proposing legislation to respond to evolving situations
    Doctors mandate - Legislation put forward to deal with emergencies or new treaties.
    Ministers often consult with pressure groups and other interested parties before introducing legislation.
    E.g, Cameron consulted with employers before introducing an apprenticeship levy.
  • Delegated Legislation
    Otherwise known as statutory instruments. New legislation will have to go through typical parliamentary scrutiny and procedure. However delegated legislation allows the government to make amendments to existing legislation without the need for parliament approval .
  • Proposing the Budget
    The government needs to raise money in order to fund public services. The budget is drawn up by the Chancellor, and later revealed to the cabinet. The Budget is an annual statement of the government plans for tax and spending.
  • Representation abroad
    Being a representative in international organisations and conferences.
    Overseeing international agreements.
    Representation at international events, such as sporting events.
