  • Royal Prerogative Powers
    Powers once held by the Monarch which are now held by the government.
    Appoint ministers.
    Award honours and peerages.
    Declare war/ use of armed forces.
    Sign treaties.
    Call general elections.
    Grant passports.
  • Initiating Legislation
    Often starts in the Commons.
    If a government has a large majority then it can get legislation through the Commons without concern.
  • Delegated Legislation
    Amending legislation.
    Largely meant for quick, technical changes.
    In 2020, 1,618 statutory instruments were passed, but only 29 Acts of Parliament.
