  • Who was Edward Jenner
    1796 Edward Jenner carried out an experiment inserting cowpox into an 8 year old boy. He know became immune to the deadly smallpox.
    This was the first vaccination. he published his book in 1798.

    • reduced number of smallpox cases
    • fostered a growing acceptance for vaccination as a preventative measure

    • he couldn't explain how or why the vaccine worked so he was ignored
    • doctors made money from inoculation, so they ignored
    • doctors disliked him as he was from the countryside
    • William Woodville and George Pearson ran tests with cowpox however their equipment was contaminated which led to the death of a patient
