  • sugar
    -mix the food and Benedict solution, place in water bath at 60-70 degrees for 5 minutes
    -light blue to red
  • starch
    -mix the food and iodine in test tube
    -brown to blue-black
  • protein
    -mix the food and biuret regent (sodium hydroxide + copper sulphate)
    -light blue to lilac/purple
  • lipids
    -add an equal amount of distilled water and ethanol to a test tube with the food
    -white emulsion will form on the surface
