  • Scrutiny
    This is done through debates and the legislative process, another key way is through committees.
  • Public Bill Committees
    Scrutinise proposed legislation, offer amendments to the wording of bills.
  • House of Lords Committees
    Scrutinises proposed legislation and offer amendments.
  • Select Committees
    Scrutinise the performance of major state departments.
    Some have been set up to investigate specific projects. E.g. HS2.
  • Liaison Committee
    Consists of the chairs of all other committees.
    Aims to oversee the committees themselves.
    Holds the PM to account.
  • Effective Scrutiny
    Can take evidence from experts.
    MPs often cooperate across party lines.
    Often affect details of a bill.
  • Ineffective Scrutiny
    Whips select the MPs who sit on these committees, lacks independence.
    Rarely make large scale or fundamental changes to bill.
