Compounds

• To name a simple compound of metals and non-metals:

  • write down the name of the metal
  • write down the name of the non-metal
  • the metal is always first and ending is not changed
  • the non-metal is second and the ending is modified to -ide
• To name a compound which contains three or more elements including oxygen:

  • write down the name of the metal
  • write down the name of the non-metal
  • the metal is first and the ending is not changed
  • the non-metal comes second and the ending is modified to -ate

  Iron Sulphide
• The compound name for "Magnesium Nitrogen" is?

  Magnesium Nitride
