Evaluation of forgetting retreival failure

  • Research to support- godden and Baddeley- pp divers learned list on land and under water- half had to recall in same context and half diff context, forgetting was higher in pps who had to recall info in a different context.
  • Research to support comes from Carter and Cassaday, pps were people who were asked to learn a word list while taking anti-histamines or not. Half had to recall the info in the same state as encoding it, other half had to recall in diff state. Research has RWA, explanations of forgetting have been used to develop the first technique of the cognitive interview,
  • cognitive interview- pps were asked to mentally recreate the context that they were in when they witnessed a crime or an event. therefore these explanations have helped increase EWT accuracy.
  • However, cause and effect cannot be established within this research. if a ppt cannot recall information when in a different context or state that they encoded it, we infer that the absence of cues influenced the recall. however, there are so many extraneous variables that could influence an individual to forget info as there is no way of being sure of a causal relationship
