Aerobic and Anaerobic Respiration

Cards (4)

  • Aerobic Respiration:
    • Respiration with oxygen
    • Happen inside mitochondria
    glucose + oxygen - > carbon dioxide + water
  • Anaerobic Respiration:
    • Respiration without oxygen
    • Does not transfer as much energy as aerobic - glucose is not fully oxidised
    • Useful in emergencies
    glucose - > lactic acid
  • Anaerobic respiration in plants and yeast:
    • Plant and yeast respire without oxygen but they produce ethanol and carbon dioxide
    • Anaerobic respiration in yeast cells is fermentation
    • Fermentation is of great value as it is used to make bread and alcholoic drinks
    • In bread making, carbon dioxide makes bread rise
    • In making alcohol, it's the fermation that makes the alcohol
    glucose - > ethanol + carbon dioxide
    • Oxidation of glucose is incomplete in anaerobic respiration
    • So, less energy is transferred thn in aerobic respiration
