Internal energy and energy transfers

Subdecks (1)

Cards (8)

    • Internal energy is total kinetic and potential energy of all particles that make up a system
    • Heating the system transfers energy to particles and an increase in internal energy
    • So, there is a change in temperature or change in state
    • Change in temperature depends on SHC
    • Change in state happens if substance is heated enough - energy needed to break bonds
    • A change in temperature is dependent of SHC
    • SHC is amount of energy required to raise temperature of one kilogram of substance by 1 degrees
    • change in thermal energy = mass x SHC x temperature change
