L5.2.4.2.1.1.2: Contraceptive Patch

Cards (4)

  • A transdermal patch applied to the skin that releases synthetic estrogen and progestin hormones to prevent pregnancy
Worn on several areas of a woman’s body, most specifically areas with larger muscles that are proximal to the reproductive tract:
    Lower abdomen
    Buttocks
(However, it can be worn on other areas as it creates a systemic effect)
  • How to use Contraceptive Patches
Patch is worn 1 week at a time and is changed on the same week 3 times a month. The 4th week is patch-free.
  • Example:
    (First 3 Weeks of November)
    1. Monday, Nov 6 (Change)
    2. Monday, Nov 13 (Change)
    3. Monday, Nov 19 (Change)
(Last Week or 4th Week - Patch Free)
    ● Rationale: By the 4th week, there is already possible menstrual flow, as another cycle begins.
  • Effectiveness
A different site must be used each time a new patch is applied for 99% effectiveness
