Smiths Fractures

  • Smiths Fracture:
    • less common than the Colles fracture
    • distal radius fracture - 2.5 cm proximal to the radiocarpal joint with volar displacement
    • most commonly extraarticular fracture (type 1) but can also be intraarticular or juxtarticular
    • MOI: FOOSH + Wrist Flexion
    • Investigation:
    • Imaging: Xray (AP + Lateral)
    • Palmar angulation & Displacement
    • Radial shortening
    Management will depend on degree of displacement and bone  health
    • Non-displaced: NWB & POP/thermoplastic for 4 to 6 weeks
    • Displaced: NWB & Closed reduction or ORIF
    • Re Xray in 2 weeks and 6 weeks
