Realistic Conflict theory

• What is realistic conflict theory?

  The idea that where there is a decrease in resources there is competition which causes prejudice.
• What is inter group competition?


  Conflict between groups = prejudice
• What is negative interdependence?

  Two groups are seeking to achieve a goal that only one can achieve
• What is equal status?

  Realistic conflict arises when two groups have some shared characteristics which makes them on a similar level
• What is meant by zero sum?


  > resource is finite (limited)

  > always going to be a winner and a loser

  > creates more conflict (fierce)
• How can conflict be reduced?

  > superordinate goals - shared goal can only be achieved by people working together

  > positive interdependence - neither group can reach their goal unless the other group reaches theirs
