Godden and Baddeley's study of context

Cards (5)

  • Aim-
See If the context of learning and recall has an impact on how many words we remember
  • Method-
    • 18 participants who were divers
    • Given a list of 36 unrelated words to learn
    • Then tested to see how many they could recall
    • Listened to the words in two conditions- beach and water
    • Recalled in two conditions- beach and water
  • Results-
Divers remembered most words when the learning and recall environments matched
e.g, listened and recalled on beach and beach or ocean and ocean
  • Conclusion-
Learning and recalling information in the same context improves the accuracy of memory.
  • Evaluation point 1
    • Strength- Research on impact of context has helped police when interviewing witnesses
    • Police can tame witnesses back to the scene of the crime to refresh their memory
