  • Plot reinforced threat of Mary and Catholics a home and abroad
  • Reinforced threat to England from Spain - persecution of Dutch protestants spread, so Duke of Alba's presence in Netherlands led to concern
  • Elizabeth forcused on improving relations with France due to threat from Spain
