  the great stink 1858 - no sewers - waste went in Thames -- in the summer Thames dried - bad smell --- MP couldn't cope

  in 18 days new laws were passed to provide more money (from rich) for new sewer - London problem = solved, everywhere else = same
• 1867


  working class men got the vote - LAISSEZ FAIRE IS OVER!!!!
• 1875 Public Health Act


  all towns HAD to provide:

  • clean water
  • proper drainage
  • proper sewage
  • public toilets
  • Medical Officers of Health
• other laws

  • better quality houses
  • public parks for exercise
  • housing inspections
  • street lighting
  • food quality checks
