inorganic ions

• an inorganic ion does not contain carbon
• examples of inorganic ions are:

  phosphate

  iron

  hydrogen

  sodium
• iron ions in haemoglobin, iron ions bond to the oxygen to be transported around organisms
• hydrogen ions control ph. the more hydrogen ions the lower the ph. the fewer hydrogen ions the highr the ph
• sodium ions help glucose and amino acids to cross cell membranes. this is called co-transport
• when phosphate ions bond to another molecule a phosphate group is formed. the bonds between phosphate groups in ATP are what store energy
• inorganic ions are found in solution in bodily fluids of organisms eg cytoplasm
