Seismic Waves

• The energy which is radiated in all direction from the focus in the form of waves are called seismic waves, which are recorded in the seismograph
• body wave travel through a layer of the earth in this is the main type of seismic waves
• surface wave can only travel through the surface and this type of seismic waves
• body waves have higher frequency
• primary waves travel quickly and faster. It can travel to all types of mediums. ( Type of Body Wave )
• secondary waves are slower through earth and solids
• secondary waves moves in shear or transverse ( Type of Body Wave )
• primary waves are also known as compressional ( type of body wave )
• Love waves travel, faster and moves the ground side to side in horizontal motion. It has the most damage.
• Rayleigh moves up and down in this wave rolls along the ground
• Primary wave is a longitudinal wave
• Secondary waves only travel through solids
• Primary waves can travel through crust, mantle, and core
• Surface waves are the most destructive waves
• outer core is though to be liquid
• Surface waves can travel through crust
• when primary waves pass through solid liquid media, it’s velocity decreases
• velocity of surface waves is 4 km/s
• why do secondary waves travel and solids only?
