Instrumentation

• Full symphony orchestra with over 60 players
• Avoids use of electronic effects or synthesisers
• Mainly thickly scored with a few uses of lighter textures
• Instruments include:

  Trumpets, Horns, Violins, Trombones, Tubas, Tutti
• The main theme is played by the brass section (trumpet, horn)
• The melody is then passed to other instruments such as violin and woodwind
• The music builds up gradually through the addition of more instruments until it reaches its climax at the end.
• John Williams used a variety of instruments to create different moods throughout the score.
• The percussion section adds rhythmic interest to the piece.
• The use of brass gives the music power and grandeur.
