neurons

Cards (6)

  • where are the motor neurons located?
    in the central nervous system
. but have long axons that are found as part of the peripheral neuron system
  • where are the sensory neurons found?
they're found outside the CNS, in the PNS in clusters known as ganglia
  • what happens when when an electrical transmission happens (firing of an neuron)
when a neuron is in a resting state, inside the cell is negatively charged
.when its activated by a stimulus, the inside becomes positively charged for a split second causing an action potential
. this creates an electrical impulse to travel down
  • what are the three types of neurons?
    .sensory
    .motor
    .relay
  • describe the structure of a neuron
.the cell body includes a nucleus which contains the genetic material
    .dendrites carry the nerve impulse
.axon's carry the impulse away from the cell body
. its covered in a fatty layer of myelin sheath that protects the axon and speeds up the electrical transmition
.the myelin sheath is segmented in gaps called the node of Ranvier which forces the impulse to jump across the gaps .
  • label the parts of the neuron
    A) axon
    B) dendrites
    C) nucleus
    D) node of Ranvier
    E) myelin sheath
    F) schwann cells
    G) cytopslasm
