Coast case study - South Coast

    Cards (5)

    • Do nothing
Decision taken to let nature take its course. Often done in areas of scientific interest or where there is little human activity to protect.
    • Studland bay
Protected bay, low energy waves – no housing behind so little management used. Ropes keep
River case study - River Wye, Wales/England
people of dunes which will be binded and strengthened by vegetation over time. Low cost but high effectiveness.
    • Lulworth Cove to Durdle Door
Natural coastline with no buildings under threat. Management would ruin
view and stop tourism. Therefore coast left alone.
    • Hold the line
Defend the coast where it is. Common in seaside resorts with lots of business, residents and
      tourism.
    • Swanage Bay – Residential/tourist destination. Protection needed. Beach replenishment in 2006 - Cost
£5million, needs to be repeated every 20 years (expensive, low sustainability)
      • Groynes also added - do not look natural but catch longshore drift. Groynes covered in deposited sand
and drops off north of groyne – suggests they are working.
      • Sea walls in place a long time. Very effective if not especially
