Hemispheres and the cerebral cortex

  • The brain is divided into two symmetrical halves called the left and right hemispheres
  • Some functions are dominated by one hemisphere, which is called lateralisation
  • Activity on the left side of the body are controlled by the right hemisphere and vice Versa
  • The outer layer of both hemispheres is called the cerebral cortex, a 3mmm layer covering the inner parts of the brain
  • The human cortex is much more developed than other animals
  • The cortex appears grey due to the location of cell bodies hence the term grey matter
