book 23

    Cards (5)

    • Eurycleia goes to call Penelope, who slept through the whole fight. Penelope doesn’t believe anything Eurycleia has said, and remains in disbelief when she sees her husband.
    • Telemachus rebukes her for not greeting Odysseus more lovingly after his time away. Odysseus is more worried about the parents of all of the men he’s just murdered. He decides his family will stay at their farm until it calms down.
    • Penelope remains wary. She orders Eurycleia to move her bridal bed, and Odysseus flares up as their bed cannot be moved as it was built from a trunk of an olive tree. This confirms that Odysseus is truly her husband.
    • They get reacquainted. Odysseus gives Penelope a brief account of his journey. The next day, Telemachus and Odysseus leave for Laertes’ orchard. Penelope is given instructions to not leave her room or receive any visitors.
    • Athena cloaks Odysseus and Telemachus in darkness so no one will see them as they walk through town.
