  • Sand dunes
    Small ridges or hills of sand found at the top of a beach, above the usual maximum reach of the waves.

    Colonised by plants, which helps traps sand and increases in height to 5m
  • Yellow dune
    Shows greater variations of plants. humus traps nutrients and water when plants die and there's more shelter. 80% of sand surface is vegetated
  • Grey dune
    More stable, sheltered by wind, 100% covered y vegetation like small shrubs
  • Dune slack
    Water table reaches the surface causing water logging and surface water. Plants are adapted to damp conditions like cotton grass.
  • Mature dune
    Develop strong soil for trees, an oak climax vegetation may develop
