  • Spits
    where the coastline changes direction and longshore drift continues to move material along the beach. Longshore drift will deposit material in the sea after the coastline has changed direction. Over time the level of the sand deposited will build-up until it is above sea level.

    A bar is created when there is a gap in the coastland with water in it. This could be a bay or a natural hollow in the coastland. The process of longshore drift occurs and this carries material across the front of the bay.

    A ridge of sand that connects an island to the mainland or to another island
