  • Weathering
    The breakdown or disintegration of rock in situ at or close to the ground surface. It's a subaerial process
  • Physical weathering
    Occurs when rocks are broken down by physical factors like wind, water and temperature.
  • Examples of physical weathering
    Freeze-thaw, wetting and drying, crystallisation and exfoliation
  • Chemical Weathering
    Break down of rock because of interaction of air, water or acid with the chemical composition of the rock.
  • Examples of chemical weathering
    Carbonation and Oxidation.
  • Biological Weathering
    Breakdown of rock by plants, animals and micro-organisms.
  • Examples of biological weathering
    Roots of plants (they expand in the cracks and make them bigger) and Burrowing animals.
