PAPER 1 - HEALTH AND FITNESS

Cards (24)

  • What is health?

A complete state of positive physical, mental and social well-being not merely the absence of infirmity (by the world health organisation)
  • What are the 3 parts of health?
    1. Physical well-being
    2. Mental well-being
    3. Social well-being
  • What is fitness?

The ability to meet the demands of the environment
  • What are the health related components of fitness?
    • Flexibility
    • Muscular endurance
    • Cardiovascular endurance
    • Strength
  • What are the skill related components of fitness?
    • Coordination
    • Reaction time
    • Agility
    • Balance
    • Speed
    • Power/explosive strength
  • What is cardiovascular endurance?

The ability of the heart and lungs to supply oxygen to the working muscles
  • What is the importance of cardiovascular endurance?
    • Long-duration activity
    • Known as aerobic power due to its demand on the aerobic energy system to supply oxygen needed for muscle contraction
  • What is flexibility?

The range of movement around a joint
  • What is the importance of flexibility?
    • Lowers the risk of injury through overstretching the muscle
    • Improve sporting performance
  • What is strength?

A measure of the force required to overcome a resistance
  • What is maximal strength?

The greatest possible force that a performer is able to exert against a resistance
  • What is static strength?

The maximum force applied to an immovable object/body
  • What is dynamic strength?

The force applied by a performer while moving
  • What is explosive strength?

The ability to apply a large force as quickly as possible
  • What is muscular endurance?

The ability of the muscles to repeatedly contract for an extended period of time without fatigue
  • What is the importance of muscular endurance?
    • For extended duration activities when the muscles must sustain repeated contraction for an extended period time
    • For both long duration, high intensity exercise
    • Important when the same muscle group is used over and over
  • What is agility?

The ability to change the body's direction quickly and under control
  • What is balance?

The ability to maintain the centre of gravity over the base of support when still (static) or moving (dynamic)
  • What is coordination?

The ability to move 2 or more parts of the body at the same time efficiently and accurately
  • What is power/explosive strength?

The ability to apply a large force as quickly as possible. The product of strength and speed. Short duration and high intensity.
  • What is the equation for power?

    Power = strength x speed
  • What is speed?

The rate at which the body/parts are moved from once place to another. The maximal rate an individual is able to cover a set distance in a period of time.
  • What is the equation for speed?
    Speed = distance / time
  • What is reaction time?

The time taken to respond to a stimulus
