MEIOSIS/MITOSIS

    Cards (7)

    • Explain the Process of Mitosis (PMATC)
      1. (Present)Prophase, Spindle fibres start to become visible and chromosomes condense
      2. (Middle) Metaphase, Chromosomes line up in a single file line in the middle of the cell
      3. (Away) Anaphase, Chromatids are pulled to both ends of the cell by the spindle fibres, Cell starts to divide
      4. Telophase, 2 Nuclei start to form around chromosomes at both ends of the cell, cell almost finished dividing
      5. (Complete) Cytokinesis, The cytoplasm splits into two genetically identical diploid daughter cells.
    • What is the term for the exchange of genetic information during Prophase₁?
      Crossing Over
    • Explain the Process of Meiosis (P₁M₁A₁T₁)

      1. Prophase₁ = Spindle fibres appear and the chromosomes get into homologous pairs. They then exchange and transfer genetic information, this is called Crossing Over
      2. Metaphase₁ = The homologous pairs now line up in the middle of the cell.
      3. Anaphase₁ = Spindle fibres then pull the chromosomes away from their pairs to each end of the cell. The cell starts to divide.
      4. Telophase = Chromosomes are at opposite ends of the cells where 2 new nuclei are forming around them. Cell almost finished dividing.
      5. Cytokinesis = Cytoplasm splits to form 2 new cells.
    • Explain the Process of Meiosis (P₂M₂A₂T₂)

      5. (Complete) Cytokinesis, The cytoplasm splits and now forms 4 non-identical haploid gametes.
    • Differences in Meiosis/Mitosis
      1. Meiosis happens with haploid cells/Mitosis happens with diploid cells.
      2. Meiosis produces 4 daughter cells/Mitosis produces 2 daughter cells.
      3. Meiosis only happens in reproductive organs/Mitosis happens in growth.
      4. Meiosis produce haploid cells/Mitosis produces diploid cells.
      5. Meiosis produces cells with variation/Mitosis produces genetically identical cells.
      6. Meiosis is a 2 division process/Mitosis is a 1 division process.
    • Mitosis is the process by which a single cell divides into two identical daughter cells.
    • Meiosis is a form of cell division which produces four non-identical, haploid sex cells or gametes.
