• the prejudice against an individual due to their gender
• women are often marginalised, psychological research is predominantly male orientated
• Research is often dominated by male researchers and samples- leads to assumptions around women,
• Gender bias theories claim to have universality - research mainly male so suggests it is not as universal as it seems.
• Alpha bias- assumes clear diff between men and women- leads to behaviour misinterpreted because differences overestimated
• beta bias- reduces or ignores differences between men and women- leads to behaviour misinterpreted as difference is underestimated.
• Androcentrism- male behaviour judged as normal and that anything that deviates is considered abnormal- opposite is gynocentrism- Freud's androcentric assumption- girls have weaker gender identity because no fears of castration to motivate them to identify to same sex parent. suggests women are psychologically weaker
