  • A cut
    When one image is followed by another without a transition- multiple quickly create excitement.
  • Cross-cutting
    The camera cuts away from one action to another action suggesting simultaneity of the actions- same time usually same place.
  • Reaction shot
    A shot of a character reacting to something that has been said or done.
  • Montage sequence
    Different images edited one next to another- show who characters are and their relationships.
  • Flashback and flash-forward
    When a cut is designed to take the audience back or forward in time within a narrative.
  • Cross-dissolve
    Where one image dissolves into another.
  • Fade in and fade out
    Where an image fades in or out.
  • Multimedia
    When a number of types of moving image are put together.
  • Match cut
    Match from one shot to the next shot- draw on elements from the previous scene
  • The Iris
    Opening/ closing the camera iris usually to end a film- old fashioned stylistic choice
  • Wipe shot
    When one shot replaces another by travelling from one side to another.
  • Passing transition
    Changing scenes but a moving character/object/camera hides the cut
  • Smash cut
    Abrupt cut creates a high contrast between visuals- shocks/jolts the audience.
