Diegetic sound
A sound that the character(s) can hear and usually relates to the image and the action can include
sound effects
e.g. a doorbell.
Non-diegetic
sound
Sound that only the audience can hear and knows is off screen e.g.
voiceover

Music
Creates the
atmosphere
and mood within the text.
Parallel sound
When the sound goes hand in hand with the image on the
screen

Contrapuntal sound
