  • Diegetic sound
    A sound that the character(s) can hear and usually relates to the image and the action can include sound effects e.g. a doorbell.
  • Non-diegetic sound 

    Sound that only the audience can hear and knows is off screen e.g. voiceover, soundtrack or sound effects.
  • Music
    Creates the atmosphere and mood within the text.
  • Parallel sound
    When the sound goes hand in hand with the image on the screen.
  • Contrapuntal sound
    When the sound would not normally be associated with the image on the screen- visuals contrast the sound.
  • Silence
    Can be used to add ambience to a scene.
  • Voice-over
    Can be seen throughout documentary films, dramatic narrative purposes or show characters’ internal thoughts.
  • Sound bridge
    Where two scenes are interlinked by a piece of music.
  • Title music
    Usually an original piece of music composed specifically for the film encapsulating the tone of the film.
