Angular motion

Cards (12)

  • What is angular motion?
Movement of a body or part in a circular path about an axis of rotation
    measured in radians
Creation of angular motion results in an eccentric force being applied to a body
An eccentric force is applied out the centre of mass = angular motion
A torque is a measure of the turning force applied to a body
  • What are the axis of rotation?
Longitudinal - Pivot in netball , Pirouette
    Frontal - Cartwheel
    Transverse - Somersault
  • What is angular velocity?
The rate of change in angular displacement
  • What is the equation for angular velocity?
Angular velocity = Angular displacement / Time taken
  • What is moment of inertia?
The resistance of a body to change its angular motion
  • What 2 factors affect moment of inertia?
    Mass
Distribution of mass around the axis of rotation
  • What is the equation of moment of inertia?
moment of inertia = the sum of (mass x distribution of the mass from the axis of rotation 2)
  • What is angular momentum?
The quantity of angular motion possessed by a body this remains constant
  • What is the conservation of angular momentum?
Angular momentum is a conserved quantity - it stays constant unless acted on by an external force
A rotating body will continue in a state of constant angular momentum until acted upon by an external torque
A body in flight will rotate with constant angular momentum until landing
  • What factors affect the size of the moment of inertia of a rotating body?
    Mass of the body
Distribution of mass around the axis of rotation
  • How does mass of the body affect the size of the moment of inertia of a rotating body?
The greater the mass the greater the resistance to change and therefore the greater the moment of inertia
  • How does the distribution of mass around the axis of rotation affect the size of the moment of inertia of a rotating body?
Decreasing the distribution of mass from the axis of rotation the easier it is to turn increasing angular velocity as moment of inertia is low
