social learning theory

    Cards (7)

    • they have the same assumptions as behaviorist apart from that they also think that behavior can be learnt indirectly from observation , not only directly like behaviorist
    • vicarious reinforcement - when watching consequences of behavior then the likely hood of them repeating action changes based on the consequence
    • mediational processes
      1. attention - how much attention you pay to behavior
      2. retention - how well you remember behaviour
      3. motor reproduction - attempting to copy behavior
      4. motivation - will to perform behaviour
    • people often identify a role model who they want to be like. they are much more likely to copy their behavior
    • bodo doll - bandura
    • bodo doll - bandura
children were separated into two conditions, one saw anger being taken out on a bodo doll through violence the other group saw other ways of dealing with anger. anger was then created by letting them play and then removing them from fun and putting them in a room with a bodo doll. those who saw the violence where more likely to be violent, showing that they learnt through observation of behaviour
    • evalutation
      pros:
gives a less reductionist explanation of learning
real world application changing what children are exposed to
      cons:
SLT is still reductionist as it doesnt take into account of biological factors of observational learning
lab studies so low ecological validity and high demand characteristics
