Rules of thumb

• psychologists should only do studies where they can be sure no-one will be harmed
• it is never okay to study people if they have not given consent
• it is okay to lie to participants if it will not cause them any long term harm
• all knowledge discovered by psychologists could be used for harm if it falls into the wrong hands
• it is okay to cause a small amount of harm to a small group if it prevents huge harm from happening to a big group in the future
• psychologists often seem to forget their participants are human and treat them as subjects
