      A law or set of laws that have been passed by parliament
    • What are policies?
      A set of ideas of what to do in particular situations that has been agreed to officially by a group of people, a business organisation, a government or a political party

      A set of guidelines and regulations to be followed by members of some professions, trade, occupation, organisation etc
    • What are some examples of legislation relating to animals?
      The Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) (England) Regulations 2018, Animal Welfare Act 2006, Welfare of Animals (Transport) Order 2006, The Welfare of Animals at Market Order 1993, The Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966, The Welfare of Farmed Animals Regulations 2007, The Welfare of Animals Regulations 1999 (slaughter or killing)
    • Welfare of Animals Regulations 1999 (slaughter or killing)

      This regulation makes sure that only licensed slaughterhouses can slaughter animals, and if it is not done in a licensed slaughterhouse, no person can slaughter any animal by religious method, or cause or permit any animal to be slaughtered
    • The Welfare of Farmed Animals Regulations 2007
      This is made under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 and sets the minimum welfare standards for all farm animals, making sure that the five animal needs are met for all animals
    • The Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966
      This act makes sure that only qualified veterinary surgeons registered with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons can carry out a veterinary surgery procedure in the UK. This includes diagnosis, medical and surgical treatments, and the performance of surgical operation.
    • The Welfare of Animals at Market Order 1993
      This order controls matters such as how animals are moved, caged and whether animals are fit and old enough to be in a market. It ensures a high standard of welfare for all animals passing through markets
    • Welfare of Animals (Transport) Order 2006
      This order makes sure animals that are being transported are cared for. It includes invertebrates. It makes sure that there is means of inspection, the animal can stand in its natural position turn and lay, there is ventilation and litter, they are fed and watered
    • Animal Welfare Act 2006
      The main act that relates to animal welfare, and protects all vertebrate animals not including humans. It enforces the five animal needs. It also prohibits animal cruelty.
    • The Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) (England) Regulations 2018
      Sets out the duties of local authorities in England to license activities involving animals and establishments relating to this. It safeguards the health and welfare of the animals involved.
