  • What is a jig used for in production?
A jig is used to assist production by speeding up the process and improving accuracy and consistency.
  • In what processes can jigs be utilized?
Jigs can be used when sawing or drilling timber.
  • What is a template in production?
    • A template speeds up production when several identical components need to be cut.
    • Can be made from paper, card, MDF, or plywood.
    • Used to draw around or as a profile to be cut around.
  • What is a pattern in relation to a template?

Wooden patterns are used in the process of casting aluminium.
  • What is a sub-assembly?
    • A sub-assembly is a completed sub-section.
    • It forms part of the main product.
  • What is a former in design and technology?
A former is a solid shape used in a vacuum former to create a mold.
  • What is the hollow part created by the vacuum forming process called?
The hollow part is called the mold.
  • What are the steps involved in the vacuum forming process?
    1. Place a 3D mold into the vacuum former.
    2. Clamp a thermoplastic sheet over the mold.
    3. Heat the plastic sheet until it softens and pulls tight.
    4. Raise the platen with the mold to press it into the plastic.
    5. Turn on the vacuum pump to remove air and form the plastic around the mold.
    6. Turn off the vacuum after 30 to 60 seconds.
    7. Use the reverse air-flow button to break contact between the mold and plastic.
    8. Trim and finish the plastic item.
  • How long should the vacuum be turned off after forming the plastic?
The vacuum should be turned off after 30 to 60 seconds.
  • What is the purpose of the reverse air-flow button in the vacuum forming process?
The reverse air-flow button is used to break the contact between the mold and the plastic.
