nature v nurture

    Cards (3)

    • nature : determined by biology/ genes (genotype). (bio approach)
nurture : determined by environment (phenotype) - lerner : pre/ post natal environments. (slt/ behaviourist approach)
interactionalist approach: how genes and environment interact with each other. (diathesis stress model/ epigenetics)
    • strengths:strengths :
      • helped develop constructivism theory - people create their own environment (appropriate to their nature), plomin: niche picking (nature)
      • interactionalist view: twins/ siblings can still have different upbringings despite their biology. (nurture)
    • limitations:limitations :
      • can result in extreme views (nativism/ empiricism) - can lead to controversy. nativism : discrimination (eugenics policy) has neg implications (nature).
      • contribution of nat v nur is that it links to determinism - hard determinism, needs to be in the middle of the debate (soft determinism - interact approach).
