• Ego

  • Forms at 18 months - 3 years old
  • reality principle - our consciousness and ability to think rationally
  • Arbitrates between the demands of the Id and superego
• Superego

  • Develops around 5 through socialisation
  • Morality principle - opposite to the Id
  • Rigid, punishing and repressive so can create neurosis such as anxiety and phobias
