Stave 4

Cards (4)

  • It was shrouded in a deep black garment

    * Description of the final ghost* The Ghost of Christmas yet to come is symbolic
    * The verb 'shrouded' makes explicit reference to death as deceased people are wrapped in a cloth called a shroud
    * This is then reinforced by the adjective 'deep black' which gives connotations of death and lack of innocence
  • "It would have done you good to see how green a place it is."
    * Description of Tiny Tim's grave
    * His grave represents Tiny Tim's life and personality- kind and goodness to others.
    * The 'green' place could be a reference to the Garden of Eden suggesting that Tiny Tim was welcomed by God into heaven
    * The Victorian readership would have found this fitting for Tiny Tim* However this is also a very sad moment as the reader finds out that he has died who was not deserving of his fate* This would make the reader adamant to the fact that Scrooge must change
  • "It was a worthy place. Walled in by houses; overrun by grass and weeds"

    * Description of Scrooge's burial site
    * Scrooge's grave in comparison to Tiny Tim's is 'overrun' and uncared for -just as he didn't care for others* Dickens presents the consequences after death for those that do not care enough for others - you will not be cared for by others when you need it the most
    * This would perhaps evoke fear in the Victorian readers challenging their current ways and encouraging them to act more like Tiny Tim and later, Scrooge in order to be treated well by others and God after death
