Formation of ions

• Ion

  • Any atom or molecule with a net charge, either positive or negative
  • are formed when an atom loses or gain its electron
  • highly reactive species
  • found in gaseous state
• produce an ion - taking a neutral atom and adding or removing one or more electron
• Metals - tend to lose electron
• nonmetals - gain electrons during chemical bonding to attain stability
• Octet rule - they must have 8 valence electrons in their outermost shell
