  • International Law
    A key aspect of globalisation is the development of international law and an adherence to a global standard of human rights.
  • UDHR 1948
    In 1948, the UN issued the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
    Stated that all humans by virtue of being human have certain, inalienable rights. However this is not binding and states can disobey.
  • ECHR 1950
    In 1950, European states signed the European Convention of Human Rights, establishing the European Court of Human Rights. Judgments by the ECHR are binding, so should be obeyed.
  • NGOs and Human Rights
    The proliferation of NGOs (Pressure groups) has helped spread of awareness of human right abuses. Pressure from these groups and citizens can force governments into change.
  • Debates around human rights
    The concept of human rights is debated by some.
    Many Middle-Eastern states are signatories of the Cairo Declaration of Human Rights, which differs on the rights offered and forbids freedom of religion.
    China often prioritises rights of the state and collective rights over those of the individual.
