UDHR 1948
In 1948, the UN issued the UniversalDeclaration of HumanRights.
Stated that all humans by virtue of being human have certain, inalienable rights. However this is not binding and states can disobey.
ECHR 1950
In 1950, European states signed the EuropeanConvention of HumanRights, establishing the EuropeanCourt of HumanRights. Judgments by the ECHR are binding, so should be obeyed.
NGOs and Human Rights
The proliferation of NGOs (Pressuregroups) has helped spread of awareness of humanrightabuses. Pressure from these groups and citizens can force governments into change.
Debates around human rights
The concept of human rights is debated by some.
Many Middle-Eastern states are signatories of the Cairo Declaration of Human Rights, which differs on the rights offered and forbids freedom of religion.
China often prioritises rights of the state and collective rights over those of the individual.
