• What are coasts managed by?

  Shoreline Management Plan (SMP) which aim to sustainably reduce the threat of flooding and erosion to people and the environment
• Four SMP policies:

  1. Hold the line- using Sea defences to stop erosion and keep the Coastline where it is.
  2. Advance the line- use sea defences to move the coast further into the sea
  3. Managed realignment- gradually let the coast erode and move people/businesses from at risk areas
  4. No intervention- let nature take its course

  Coastal defences that work with natural coastal processes, they tend to be natural looking and cheaper to make
