  • 25th September - Harold raced north with his Fryd towards an unaware Scandinavian army (the army did not have their chainmail armour on). Harald and Tostig both killed along with thousands of others and army retreated
  • 28th September - Norman’s land in Pevensy and begin pillaging (raiding) Harold’s land

  • Who held the advantage at the start of the battle?

    Anglo-Saxons: located at the top of the hill and made a strong shield wall
    Norman’: although they had their cavalry and archers they could not break the Ango-Saxons shield wall
  • What caused the shield wall to break?
    A rumour went around claiming William was dead therefore the Anglo-saxons believed they won and began to break the wall. The Norman’s also faked a retreat to trick the Anglo-Saxons into breaking their shield wall, along with their cavalry this gave them the advantage to win the battle
